After the “bonding activity”, Leo and I follow the rest of the couples to the dining hall where they’re serving dinner. Beside us there’s a couple who seem to be in a tense argument, fighting already over their cuff-imposed closeness.

“Maybe if you bothered using deodorant, you would – “

“I did use deodorant.”

“And your breath! Did you even brush your teeth this morning?”

“Stop it.”

“Did you?”

“Of course I did.”

“Sure. That’s what you always say.”

“Just drop it, already.”

The woman sighs loudly, then continues to speak.

“This place is awful. For what we’re paying, I expected five-star quality. Our bed is terrible. What thread count are those sheets, anyway? It’s like sleeping on sandpaper. And if they try to serve me refined carbohydrates one more time, I swear I’ll…”

“You’ll what? You gonna give them a one-star Yelp review? Ask to speak to the manager? God, you are such a fucking Karen -”

“I TOLD YOU TO NEVER CALL ME THAT AGAIN!”

Leo and I jump at the abrupt shouting behind us. I look over my shoulder and the woman, sandy-haired and glaring at her husband, glances at me.

“What are you looking at?” she snaps.

“Sorry,” I shrug.

“You know, it’s rude to eavesdrop,” she continues, narrowing her eyes at me.

“That’s true,” the husband eagerly agrees. “Mind your business.”

“Yeah,” his wife adds with a sneer. “Mind your business.”

Great. It looks like maybe their bonding activity of the night is uniting behind their mutual dislike of me. It makes for a great distraction for their contempt for one another, I guess.

I turn to face forward again, navigating the slightly rocky path in my thin shoes. I’ve nearly forgotten all about the sour-faced couple when the husband speaks again.

“Nosy, rubber-necking cow,” he mutters under his breath.

Before I know it, I’m being dragged by my cuffed wrist as Leo whirls around to stand nose to nose with the man.

“You better shut your mouth,” he growls. “Before I shut it for you. Permanently.”

“Leo!” I gasp.

The husband begins to speak again, but Leo cuts him off.

“You want to make it out of this week with your original face intact?” Leo continues through clenched teeth.

The man nods.

“Then I suggest you shut the fuck up when it comes to my wife,” he says.

The sandy-haired woman is wide eyed. Beside her, her husband seems to be shrinking on the spot. Or maybe it’s just that he looks short and frail when he’s right next to Leo’s considerable mass. His boulder-like muscles and large frame could make most men seem smaller in comparison.

He looks wound up, spring loaded and ready to throw himself at the other man. I’ve seen this version of Leo before, and it’s alarming how familiar the scene is, how quickly Leo’s anger and barely contained violence bring me right back to old times.

It’s scary.

It’s also – and it’s not like I’m proud to admit this – a huge turn-on.

“Leo,” I whisper, putting my free hand on his shoulder. “Come on, we’re holding up the group.”

Leo’s eyes are still locked on the man, who looks like he’s about to pee his pants.
