After the âbonding activityâ, Leo and I follow the rest of the couples to the dining hall where theyâre serving dinner. Beside us thereâs a couple who seem to be in a tense argument, fighting already over their cuff-imposed closeness.
âMaybe if you bothered using deodorant, you would â â
âI did use deodorant.â
âAnd your breath! Did you even brush your teeth this morning?â
âStop it.â
âDid you?â
âOf course I did.â
âSure. Thatâs what you always say.â
âJust drop it, already.â
The woman sighs loudly, then continues to speak.
âThis place is awful. For what weâre paying, I expected five-star quality. Our bed is terrible. What thread count are those sheets, anyway? Itâs like sleeping on sandpaper. And if they try to serve me refined carbohydrates one more time, I swear Iâllâ¦â
âYouâll what? You gonna give them a one-star Yelp review? Ask to speak to the manager? God, you are such a fucking Karen -â
âI TOLD YOU TO NEVER CALL ME THAT AGAIN!â
Leo and I jump at the abrupt shouting behind us. I look over my shoulder and the woman, sandy-haired and glaring at her husband, glances at me.
âWhat are you looking at?â she snaps.
âSorry,â I shrug.
âYou know, itâs rude to eavesdrop,â she continues, narrowing her eyes at me.
âThatâs true,â the husband eagerly agrees. âMind your business.â
âYeah,â his wife adds with a sneer. âMind your business.â
Great. It looks like maybe their bonding activity of the night is uniting behind their mutual dislike of me. It makes for a great distraction for their contempt for one another, I guess.
I turn to face forward again, navigating the slightly rocky path in my thin shoes. Iâve nearly forgotten all about the sour-faced couple when the husband speaks again.
âNosy, rubber-necking cow,â he mutters under his breath.
Before I know it, Iâm being dragged by my cuffed wrist as Leo whirls around to stand nose to nose with the man.
âYou better shut your mouth,â he growls. âBefore I shut it for you. Permanently.â
âLeo!â I gasp.
The husband begins to speak again, but Leo cuts him off.
âYou want to make it out of this week with your original face intact?â Leo continues through clenched teeth.
The man nods.
âThen I suggest you shut the fuck up when it comes to my wife,â he says.
The sandy-haired woman is wide eyed. Beside her, her husband seems to be shrinking on the spot. Or maybe itâs just that he looks short and frail when heâs right next to Leoâs considerable mass. His boulder-like muscles and large frame could make most men seem smaller in comparison.
He looks wound up, spring loaded and ready to throw himself at the other man. Iâve seen this version of Leo before, and itâs alarming how familiar the scene is, how quickly Leoâs anger and barely contained violence bring me right back to old times.
Itâs scary.
Itâs also â and itâs not like Iâm proud to admit this â a huge turn-on.
âLeo,â I whisper, putting my free hand on his shoulder. âCome on, weâre holding up the group.â
Leoâs eyes are still locked on the man, who looks like heâs about to pee his pants.
